Club Atlético de Madrid coach Quique Sánchez Flores said his side's 2-0 victory against FC Internazionale Milano in the UEFA Super Cup was fully merited as the Spanish side won their second European trophy of the year. While Atlético were able to celebrate their first win in the competition, opponents Inter will now have to wait to pick up their maiden title, with Rafael Benítez conceding that his team's opponents were "physically" and "tactically" stronger.

Quique Sánchez Flores, Atlético coach
We're extremely pleased to have won this final – that was our goal. We think we can feel very happy indeed and we want to share this with all our fans. Physically, we are a very fit team – this might not have been clear over the last season – but I think we were good on every level. We were fast and strong and each goal was clear cut, so we played well. Inter work very well defensively and I imagined Maicon might cause problems going forward, but Simão and Álvaro Domínguez negated him very well. We created dangerous opportunities; they played well, but quite frankly we deserved the victory.

Our goals this season are fairly distinct. We want to up our performance in the Spanish league as we only did so-so in that competition last year. We also want to win a cup – it will be tough, but the team is playing quite well. There is a given pressure that is always there and we have to continue doing our best. We think we've managed this achievement because of how we did last season and it also gives us a great start to the new one.

Rafael Benítez, Inter coach
At the beginning the team was playing well, but little by little they came into it and were dangerous on the counterattack before they took control. Maybe our team weren't quite as fit as them and we weren't as intense as we could have been against a team that was physically stronger.

It's clear that we will need some time to get the right mix: we need to keep some things the same as the way the team played in the past and change other things. Usually after the World Cup you don't have much time to prepare a team – we won the Italian Super Cup [against AS Roma], but we could not manage it tonight.

It was an important trophy for us. We couldn't win but we need to keep going. They were very strong on the counterattack and this made it difficult for our team to impose themselves. Today we did the same thing as against Roma but the difference is the opposing team played well tactically.
