Swiss get top billing in Wales

Switzerland and Wales are heading for the Elite round of the UEFA European Under-17 Championship after emerging as the top sides in the Group 12 mini tournament.

Confident progress
Having played in the finals of the previous competition in May, Switzerland under new coach Pierluigi Tami strode confidently through the qualifying round with three wins in Wales. After a 5-1 win against Estonia in their opening game in Rhyl, they beat Kazakhstan 4-1 in their second match and still had enough in the tank to secure a 3-0 win against Bryan Flynn's host side in their final match on Monday.

Wales through
Wales qualified none the less, having secured an all-important win against Estonia in their second match in Rhyl after drawing 2-2 against Kazakhstan in their opening game. However, they had Viktor Mets's Estonia to thank for their progress as their 2-1 win against Kazakhstan in their final game in Flint ensured that the former Soviet republic did not finish level on points with Wales. Had Kazakhstan secured a heavy win, they could have reached the Elite round on goal diffeence.
