Must-win match
The result threw the Group 4 mini-tournament wide open - with Wales now top of the standings with a maximum six points from two games, while the Portuguese and Greeks have three apeice. Portugal must now win their final game against Israel, and hope Wales lose theirs against Greece, to stand any chance of qualifying.
Booth strikes
It was an extremely tight first half, with few chances at either end. After the interval, the home side took the initiative with right-back Gilberto Silva twice hitting the post with efforts. However it was Wales who showed more ruthlessness in front of goal. In the 66th minute, after a sweeping counterattack down the right involving Philip Gray and Scott Thyer, Mitchell Booth put the visitors in front.
'Fight until the end'
Portugal tried to find an equaliser but Wales held firm and secured a famous victory. After the match Portugal coach Carlos Dinis was defiant. "We will fight until the end," he said. "We were not strong enough to break their resistance. They had only a few chances, but they scored. We still hope we can qualify but things are harder now."
Rush delight
Meanwhile Wales coach Ian Rush was understandably elated after seeing his side move to within one point of a place in his summer's finals. "It was an excellent victory," he said. "We knew that Portugal have a better team but we played very well. We are just one draw from qualification. Greece will be tough opponents but I think we have a chance to go through."
