Ruud Kaiser's Dutch side were 3-0 up by half-time as the Latvians endured a torrid debut in this stage of the competition. Melvin Zaalman opened the scoring on five minutes and his Sparta Rotterdam club-mate Marvin Emnes doubled the lead in the 28th minute. Five minutes later AFC Ajax's Jeffrey Sarpong struck and Emnes completed the victory 12 minutes from the end.
'Just warming-up'
Kaiser, whose team now face the Czech Republic on Monday fresh from a defeat by group hosts Germany, said: "That was just warming up - the round begins now." Latvia take on Germany in Baden-Baden knowing victory is paramount to keep alive their chances of gaining the one place available for the finals in Italy.
