Only two minutes had gone when Fabian Frei put Switzerland, qualifiers last season and European champions at this level in 2002, into a 1-0 lead. Gianluca Frontino doubled the advantage nine minutes later and two minutes before the break Valentin Stocker put the result beyond doubt.
