Group A reaction: The coaches of Hungary and Luxembourg believe that the damage was done to their campaign before today's defeats by Spain and Russia.
Article body
Spain and Russia are through to the UEFA European Under-17 Championship semi-finals from Group A after 2-0 wins against Hungary and Russia respectively. In first place are Spain, who won all their pool games, will next play the Czech Republic, and took their tally to 12 goals in defeating a Hungarian team reduced to ten men when Dániel Lengyel was sent off for striking an opponent. Hosts Luxembourg made Russia, who now play Germany, work for their win, produced by goals at the end of each half from Igor Gorbatenko and Evgeni Korotaev. uefa.com rounds up the reaction.
SPAIN 2-0 HUNGARY
Juan Santisteban, Spain coach
Because of the quality of the Hungarian players like Vladimir Koman or Krisztián Németh, technically and physically it was the most difficult game we have played. I would like to thank all our regional coaches who have produced these players and recognise the help we have received. It is work done at the regional level that has made this team. There are three or four very important players who are one yellow card away from being suspended of the final, so it is very risky.
József Both, Hungary coach
I would like to congratulate Spain who were stronger and better than us today. It was too big a task for us to take on. I am really sad about one thing - I think we could have achieved qualification because we are a better team than Russia. But those six missed chances [in the 1-0 Matchday 1 loss] meant that we are out. [The sending-off] was a mistake which was very bad for the team but even after with ten men we kept trying to attack. Also maybe it was not the result of craziness but the will to win. I have had a very good year with the team, it have enjoyed it and I am thinking about that rather than the future.
RUSSIA 2-0 LUXEMBOURG
Igor Kolyvanov, Russia coach
This match was really tough and very difficult for our team, because Luxembourg side was very well-organised and prepared. It was difficult to break through. The two previous games were really difficult for us physically, and we could feel in this game that the players were not in good shape. That's why the first goal that we scored was very important. I expected Luxembourg to play the way they did. I had told our players to prepare for it, that they would have to fight. I have to stress that Igor Gorbatenko saved the game by scoring the first goal. By getting to the semi-finals, our primary goal is achieved. Now we will try to do even better.
Ronny Bonvini, Luxembourg coach
I'd like to congratulate Russia for winning and making the semi-finals. They had one chance in the first half and scored, only the best players can do that. We had lots of opportunities, put on pressure but didn't score. It's the only complaint I can make about my team. I can not be satisfied about this tournament. The level at which we played today and during the first half against Hungary was our real level. I can forgive my team the first game [losing 7-1 to Spain], because there was a lot of pressure, to which my players weren't used. Also we had to start against the best team in this tournament, who crushed us.On the two other games I have regrets, because we conceded six goals to two opponents that were at the same level as us.
