Germany quickly into their stride

Germany 4-0 Northern Ireland Germany continued their perfect season with a comfortable victory in their Group 1 opener.

Germany continued their fine form in this season's UEFA European Under-17 Championship as they cruised to a comfortable win against Northern Ireland in their opening Elite round Group 1 match in the Netherlands watched by an impressive crowd of 500.

Breakthrough
Having scored 16 goals without reply in the qualifying round – the best record of any team - and won all eight fixtures this season, Germany have been tipped as potential winners of the European title, but were given a tough game by Northern Ireland until Manuel Fischer scored in the 23rd minute. Toni Kroos doubled the lead early in the second half, the skilful Marko Marin added another just past the hour, and with three minutes left Lars Bender completed the scoring.

Coach satisfied
"We first had to get accustomed to the fighting spirit and defensive tactics of the Northern Irish," Germany coach Bernd Stöber said. "The result reflected the balance of play." On Sunday his side meet the Netherlands in Gemert, while Northern Ireland play Finland in Venray. The Dutch beat Finland 1-0, so if Germany win and Northern Ireland avoid defeat, Stöber's team will qualify for Luxembourg with a match to spare.
