An early own-goal set Belgium on course for a comfortable 2-0 win against Poland and a perfect start to their Group 4 campaign. There was just a minute on the clock when the hosts went behind, Poland defender Wojiciech Wilczynski putting the ball through his own net. Siegerd Degeling then doubled the lead on 16 minutes as Belgium turned their dominance into goals.
Cavallo scare
Thereafter Belgium's progress was serene, except for an injury scare for midfielder Anthony Cavallo, who was taken to hospital following a strong challenge. Although it was feared he had suffered a broken leg, a hospital diagnosis showed the limb was not fractured.
