Czechs poised for Turkey slip

Abdullah Ercan knows Turkey have "the advantage" in Group B, but that defeat by qualified England on Monday will open the door for the Czech Republic, who play eliminated Greece.

Turkey need only a point against England in Vaduz on Monday to book a UEFA European Under-17 Championship semi-final place. But against a side with eight successive competitive victories to their name, they may yet be left to sweat on the Czech Republic's attempts to beat eliminated Greece in Eschen-Mauren and overturn a three-point deficit to Turkey and an inferior goal difference of four.

Abdullah Ercan's side, though, were the last team to defeat guaranteed semi-finalists England – 3-2 in Northampton in August, 13 games ago. The Turkey coach is confident his side can repeat the trick after what he considered a below-par performance in the 1-1 draw with the Czech Republic, when an equaliser ten minutes from time denied Ercan's team a last-four berth.

"We can definitely improve against England," he said. "I can't say how we will play but I believe we can play a lot better. The draw with the Czech Republic gives us the advantage but sometimes we sat back again, especially in the last 15 minutes we let them off the hook."

England edged past Greece 1-0 at the Rheinpark Stadium on Friday but manager John Peacock, whose team know a draw would clinch first place, echoed Ercan's sentiments in calling for more from his side. "There's room for improvement," he said. "If we're going to win this tournament, which we're trying very hard to do, we have to be better. We were sloppy in some of our passing, which is usually one of the team's best qualities."

Defender Luke Garbutt told UEFA.com that Peacock has "said to expect a few changes" but, should his desired improvements deny Turkey a draw, the Czech Republic are back in with a shout. "We hope for a good result but I cannot say for sure we will score more goals against Greece, they are a good team too," said Czech coach Jiří Stol. "We will have to wait for the England result but we will try to boost our own chances."

Greece's own hopes of advancing are over after successive defeats but coach Leonidas Vokolos has no plans to allow his side to leave Liechtenstein with a whimper. "We will continue because we have one more game against Turkey and we will try to do our best," he said. "I'm very happy with my team's effort. All the players have given their best, they ran a lot and they worked hard, but this is football." Goalkeeper Stefanos Kapino is out of the game due to injury, Konstantinos Pantos has been called up.
