Netherlands coach Kees van Wonderen

Coach: Kees van Wonderen

"It was a good learning experience – the best the boys could get because they were there to develop. We played against teams with differing styles and for them it's a great experience to be learning at such a high level about different systems. We could maybe have scored more goals if we’d pulled the trigger better in the final third. We performed well to reach the semi-finals but, in the end, we had to compliment Portugal and admit that they were the better team."

Netherlands team analysis

• 1-4-2-3-1 with occasional use of 1-4-4-2, always with twin midfield screen
• Possession-based passing game; composed under pressure
• Two fast wingers skilful in 1 v 1; full-backs driving up to support
• Patient build-up play mixed with occasional direct supply to striker
• Strong, compact defending; high back four; keeper covering behind
• Good diagonal switches of play, penetrating passes through channels
• Fluent off-ball movement; positional rotation, strong team ethic
