Ukraine coach Olexandr Petrakov

Coach: Olexandr Petrakov

"The tournament demonstrated the importance of psychology and attitude. We spent quite a while telling the lads not to listen to the congratulations after the 2-2 draw with Germany. We told them to avoid the euphoria. But it was to no avail. We competed at a reasonable level but we learned that mistakes are punished. This is an important lesson for players of this age."

Ukraine team analysis

Ukraine team analysis

• Rigid 1-4-2-3-1 with wide players dropping into 1-4-4-1-1 defensive block
• High defensive line, with aggressive pressing as early as possible
• Balanced screening midfielders: Maxym Chekh defensive, Olexiy Khakhlov adventurous
• Extensive use of direct attacking via long pass to striker Andriy Kulakov
• Attacks mostly on right via Olexiy Khashchuk and overlapping full-back
• Strong, hard-working players, with disciplined adherence to playing system
• Sharp tackling in 1 v 1 situations; aerial power at set plays and crosses
