Marcus Sorg

Coach Marcus Sorg

"Nobody can lift or support the players but themselves. They don't have any 30-year-olds to lift them up, as they might do in their clubs. It's all down to them here and that's the beauty of a tournament like this. The team came through plenty of difficulties – also in the elite round. We put so much into it but didn't get our reward. I felt sorry for the players, but that's part of the game. Now we've got to ensure that we take this experience with us and those who get to play in a tournament like this again will have learned a lot."

Germany team analysis

• 1-4-3-3 with either single or twin screening midfielders
• High-tempo combination play based on building from central area at back
• Also direct supply to striker Werner, dropping deep to receive and turn
• Power-play start to every game with high pressing in numbers
• Attacks supported by full-backs, especially Klünter on right
• Fast, skilful interchanging wingers; well-drilled set plays
• Strong physique, athletic condition; hard-running team with collective qualities
