Sigurdarson double helps Iceland past Belgium

Belgium were left ruing a lack of cutting edge in their first match of qualifying Group 8 after losing 2-1 to Iceland, for whom Björn Sigurdarson scored twice.

Sigurdarson opened the scoring on 25 minutes when he ran on to Björn Sverrisson's through ball and deftly chipped goalkeeper Colin Coosemans. Though Francky Dury's side controlled the game for long spells and restored parity before the break through Christian Benteke, who was unfortunate not add to his tally, Sigurdarson had the final say with three minutes remaining.

Set clear by Kristinn Steindórsson, the Lilleström SK striker kept his composure for a second time, ensuring the hosts of a winning start in their bid to reach the UEFA European Under-21 Championship finals for the second successive tournament.
