Montenegro's slim hopes of making the UEFA European Under-21 Championship play-offs were ended by the Faroe Islands.

A draw for Montenegro would have given them Group 6 second place above Romania, though even a victory would have left them hard-pressed to be one of the four best runners-up. Ári Jonsson's fine solo effort on 33 minutes made that academic and Montenegro lost Stefan Mugoša to a red card near the end.

Faroe Islands coach William McLoud Jacobsen, whose team secured their only victory in the group to end a 16-game winless competitive run, said: "We were a very brave team today, I must say we were a clever team as well. We didn't let Montenegro play much down the middle while we created chances and one of them led to a goal. Our confidence was high and we are very happy to beat strong opponents like Montenegro."
