Switzerland got off to a great start with a 3-1 home win over Russia, despite going behind to a strike from substitute Mourad Ramazanov. Three second-half goals in the space of 24 minutes from captain Alexandre Frei, Ricardo Cabanas and André Muff were enough to hand the Swiss all three points.

Yugoslavia cruise through
Yugoslavia secured a comfortable 3-0 away victory over Luxembourg. Bojan Brnovic and Igor Duljaj put the visitors two-nil up inside 24 minutes before skipper Branko Boskovic put the game beyond the home side with a third just before half-time.

Five star show
Two goals apiece for Aleksander Radosavljevic and Damir Pekic helped visitors Slovenia crush Luxembourg 5-1. Radosavljevic started and finished the rout, with the other strike coming from Uros Barut. Luxembourg’s consolation came courtesy of David Chaboissier.

Honours even
A sending off for Switzerland’s Reto Zanni stood out in a goalless draw away to Slovenia. It was a straight red card in a match that saw six bookings – three for each side – at Športni Park in Nova Gorica.

Russia off the mark
Russia enjoyed their first win with a 2-0 home triumph over Luxembourg, having half-time substitute Spartak Gogniev to thank for breaking the deadlock. It took him just three minutes to find the net before Petr Bystrov added a second ten minutes later.

Six-goal thriller
Yugoslavia came from behind on three occasions to grab a 3-3 draw at home to ten-man Switzerland. Bojan Brnovic cancelled out Remo Meyer’s opening goal to send the teams in level at the break. Switzerland’s Daniel Greco, who made it 2-1 with a penalty before teammate André Muff was sent off on the hour, then twice put his side in front only for Yugoslavia’s Andrija Delibasic to match his two-goal haul.

No way through
Slovenia’s second 0-0 draw of the campaign came away to Russia in Moscow. Both used all three available substitutes as they battled to find a way to goal but were to be left frustrated come the final whistle.

Brnovic the hero
Bojan Brnovic grabbed another two goals to make it four in three group games as Yugoslavia triumphed 2-1 in Slovenia. The visitors endured a nervy end to the match after Robert Koren pulled one back four minutes from time but managed to hang on for all three points.

Cabanas leads the way
A hat-trick from Ricardo Cabanas powered Switzerland to a 6-0 home win over Luxembourg. Five of the goals came before half-time with Cabanas starting things off before Daniel Greco, Daniel Gygax and Reto Zanni weighed in. Cabanas then converted a penalty just before the break but had to wait until the 89th minute to complete his treble.

Yugoslavia leave it late
A double from Spartak Gogniev looked to have given Russia a priceless away win only for Yugoslavia to level matters late on for a 2-2 draw. The hosts scored first in Belgrade through Marjan Markovic before Gogniev struck twice after the break. With seven minutes remaining, Milan Dudic stepped up to restore parity.

Sukalo proves the difference
Substitute Goran Sukalo proved the hero for Slovenia as his country had to battle for a 1-0 home win against Luxembourg. Sukalo scored the only goal - his first of the group matches - barely a quarter of an hour after entering the fray in the 56th minute.

Bystrov caps important victory
Russia scored a goal in each half to beat visitors Yugoslavia 2-0. Alan Koussov made the crucial breakthrough in the tenth minute. The home side then had to wait until the third minute of injury time to make things safe when captain Petr Bystrov notched the decisive second.

Gygax inspires Swiss
Two goals for Daniel Gygax gave Switzerland a 2-1 victory at home to Slovenia. The striker scored in each half to make it a personal haul of three goals in two group games. Damir Pekic pulled one back with a late penalty but it was not enough to get his side a share of the points.

Russia crush
Luxembourg Russia went goal crazy in Luxembourg, thumping ten past their hosts. Captain Petr Bystrov and Rouslan Pimenov both grabbed hat-tricks while Spartak Gogniev helped himself to two. Oleg Kuzmin and Marat Izmailov got in on the act too and there was also time for Russia’s Roman Romanov to get his marching orders.
