Article body
Italy's youngsters were made to work hard for a 1-1 draw by a spirited England side in an intriguing battle between two sides who will meet again in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship in May.
Pirlo peerless
The Italians had looked in full control after a majestic first-half that featured impressive play from captain Andrea Pirlo and a well-worked goal for Massimo Maccarone. However, after the break England battled back at Valley Parade in Bradford and earned a well-deserved equaliser through their own captain, Gareth Barry.
Several chances
Pirlo, of Milan AC, was the star man for the visitors and was ably supported, particularly in the first 45, by the likes of Parma AC's Emilano Bonazzoli and Juventus FC's Enzo Maresca. Italy, the reigning European champions, created several openings and should have scored more than once.
Maccarone magic
The goal came in the 15th minute and was nothing less than the Italians deserved. Empoli FC striker Maccarone was released by an incisive pass and strode through before expertly placing his shot beyond the reach of Leeds United AFC goalkeeper Paul Robinson.
Changed team
England, who had fielded an under-strength side, stepped up several gears after the interval. West Ham United FC striker Jermain Defoe, at 19 the youngest player in the home squad, always looked lively but it was defender Barry who restored parity. The Aston Villa FC player seized on a knockdown in the penalty area and scrambled the ball home with the ball touching the predatory Defoe on its way into the net.
Sides meet again
Italy and England are both in Group 1 for the U-21 competition being staged in Switzerland, which runs from 16 to 28 May. Their meeting is scheduled for 20 May.
