Playing career
Kanerva, who won 59 caps for Finland, takes over at the end of the year from Kari Ukkonen, who is set to become coach at Finnish top-flight side FC TPS Turku. During his career, the 39-year-old Kanerva played for HJK Helsinki, Finnairin Palloilijat and IF Elfsborg of Sweden.
Failure to qualify
Finland U-21s failed to qualify for next year's UEFA European Under-21 Championship as they were beaten to first and second place in their group by Italy and Serbia and Montenegro.
Coaching roles
Kanerva stopped playing in 1998 after HJK's UEFA Champions League campaign and became assistant coach at the club. He then took over as head coach at Finnish side FC Viikingit from where he has earned this latest promotion.
