Janko double denies England

England 1-2 Austria Marc Janko inspired Austria to a stunning second-half comeback to deny earned England top spot in Group 6.

Marc Janko was in inspired form, scoring twice as Austria earned a battling victory over England at Elland Road to end Peter Taylor's side's hopes of finishing top of UEFA Under-21 European Championship qualifying Group 6.

Second-half comeback
The SV Salzburg striker had a memorable second half, menacing the England back line and forcing England goalkeeper Scott Carson into a number of full-length saves. He cancelled out Carlton Cole's goal on 56 minutes, converting a low cross, before drilling home what proved to be the winner with 14 minutes remaining.

Cole header
It was a remarkable turnaround for the visitors, after they spent much of the first period penned inside their own half. It came as little surprise when England broke the deadlock on 18 minutes, after James Milner cut in from the left flank and drifted a pin-point cross onto the head of Cole who applied a clinical finish.

Missed chances
The pair almost worked a carbon copy on 35 minutes, but Cole's effort glanced off the head of an Austrian defender at the expense of a corner. The effort sparked a flurry of goalline activity, with the resulting corner eventually swung into the far post where the unmarked Michael Dawson directed an awkward header over the crossbar.

Perfect riposte
Austria almost provided the perfect riposte, launching a breathtaking counterattack that ended with György Garics crashing a header against the crossbar. England quickly rediscovered their shape and Cole and Milner both had decent headers before the visitors equalised against the run of play.

Janko joy
After Cole had a goal disallowed for offside, Janko then took centre-stage, twice forcing good saves out of Carson, before calmly slotting home the winner late on after the Coventry FC keeper could only parry into his path. The result confirmed Germany as Group 6 winners, while England qualify for the play-offs only from second place.
