Last call for U21 play-offs

With all but one of the remaining UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifiers to be played tonight, six play-off places are up for grabs.

Ten qualifiers
The Netherlands, Portugal, Italy, Belgium, Denmark, Ukraine, France, Germany, England and Croatia are already certain of contesting the play-offs, which will see group winners drawn against runners-up in two-legged ties with a ticket to next summer's finals at stake.

Eight remaining
However, as the final round of matches approaches, Romania, the Czech Republic, Russia, Slovakia, Belarus, Slovenia, Norway, Moldova, Serbia and Montenegro, Spain, Israel, Switzerland, Sweden and Hungary are still in with a chance of making the last 16. Here is the state of play:

Group 1
The Netherlands are top, with second-placed Romania, who have played all their games, one point ahead of the Czech Republic. A draw in Finland would send the Czechs through and they can overtake the Dutch should the latter fail to win their match against F.Y.R. Macedonia.

Group 2
Denmark are through to the play-offs as group winners, with Ukraine confirmed as runners-up.

Group 3
Portugal have qualified as group winners, and Russia will join them provided they do not lose by more than four goals in their final game against Slovakia, which is played, unlike the other midweek matches, on Wednesday.

Group 4
France will top the section, but Switzerland can steal second spot from Israel, who have completed their fixtures, with a win in the Republic of Ireland.

Group 5
Holders Italy are group winners with Belarus currently second, a point above Slovenia and two clear of Norway and Moldova. If Belarus win at home to Norway they will progress, but a draw could let in Slovenia provided they overcome Scotland - or should the Slovenians slip up as well, Moldova could even finish second on head-to-head record with victory in Italy. However, if Norway beat Belarus, only Slovenia could deny them by defeating the Scots.

Group 6
Germany advance as pool winners with England finishing as runners-up.

Group 7
Belgium are through and will be confirmed as group winners if they take a point in Lithuania. Serbia and Montenegro will at least be second if they win at home to Bosnia-Herzegovina (or top if Belgium lose). However, should Serbia and Montenegro fail to gain maximum points, Spain would leapfrog them with victory in San Marino.

Group 8
Croatia are group winners. Sweden have a tentative hold on second position thanks to their superior head-to-head record against Hungary, and should they match Hungary's result against Croatia when they face Iceland, the Swedes will progress.
