Mathijssen and Drost miss out

Netherlands players Danny Mathijssen and Jeroen Drost will miss the UEFA European Under-21 Championship finals after failing to recover from injuries.

Netherlands midfielder Danny Mathijssen and defender Jeroen Drost will miss the UEFA European Under-21 Championship after failing to recover from injuries in time for the finals.

Injury woe
On loan at RKC Waalwijk from AZ Alkmaar, the 23-year-old Mathijssen picked up an ankle injury three weeks ago on the final day of the Eredivisie season, as his side were beaten 4-2 by AFC Ajax. "I did everything I could to force my way into the squad for the European Championship, even going out on loan to get more playing time, and things were going well until this," said Mathijssen.

Monday deadline
Meanwhile, SC Heerenveen's Drost, 19, has been forced to withdraw having been unable to shake off a groin problem. Netherlands coach Foppe de Haan will name his 22-man selection for the finals in Portugal on Monday.
