Portugal coach Agostinho Oliveira offered his opposite number his congratulations after René Girard came up with a defensive masterplan which stifled the hosts' attacking ambitions in their opening Group A game. France won the game in the 41st minute as Portugal No1 Bruno Vale saw a Jimmy Briand header rebound off the bar and his back before nestling in the back of the net. uefa.com rounds up the reaction from Braga.

René Girard, French coach
We played the game we had to - meaning we have started the tournament in the best possible way. We scored at the right moment, and from then on controlled the game. Victory in the first match is always important, especially in a game as difficult as this. I was afraid that we might lack the right balance defensively, but my defenders impressed me with their performance. It was a festival of football both on and off the pitch.

Agostinho Oliveira, Portuguese coach
The French won a good game by defending very high up the pitch which had a severe impact on our plans. We tried to attack down the wings but they covered the space really well. I have said all along that the eight teams in the tournament are very strong, the groups are well balanced and that games would be decided on minor details. We played with our hearts and a draw would have been a fair outcome. However, I have to offer my congratulations to France.

Florent Sinama-Pongolle, French striker
I wasn't surprised to have played the whole game as the coach has confidence in me. I know I can play up front or out wide but wherever I play I always play for the team as the result is the most important thing. It was important for us to start the tournament well but the game against Germany will be decisive as they've also won tonight. All eight teams are competitive so we must keep our concentration throughout.
