Decisive double
Portugal coach José Couceiro had Manuel da Costa and Paulo Machado to thank after they scored two goals in the space of four second-half minutes to settle the match. Although they knew only a victory would allow them to advance, Portugal struggled to create chances during the first half, with Poland happy to sit back and wait for mistakes. Vieirinha and Varela were causing problems on the flanks but their crosses failed to find Portuguese targets.
Second half sub
João Moreira came on for Vieirinha after the break and Portugal raised their game, striking twice in quick succession. The opener came after 52 minutes via PSV Eindhoven centre-back Da Costa, who headed in Paulo Machado’s free-kick. Soon after, Ruben Amorim dispossessd a defender before setting up Machado for the second goal. Poland tried to get back into the game but they almost conceded a third in the 72th minute when Ricardo Vaz Té's shot went centimetres wide of the post.
