The Netherlands made it three wins from as many Group 10 matches courtesy of Nacer Barazite’s seventh-minute winner against Austria in Innsbruck.
The 21-year-old − who scored eight times for FK Austria Wien in UEFA Europa League qualifying and another in their group stage victory at Malmö FF last week − maintained his rich vein of goalscoring form with a fierce drive past club-mate Heinz Lindner, but the Dutch had to dig deep to protect their lead.
Austria were denied an equaliser after 37 minutes when Jeroen Zoet produced a stunning save to repel Stefan Schwab's header and the goalkeeper continued his heroics after the break to keep out an effort from Stefan Hierländer.
The RKC Waalwijk custodian was undone just after the hour when he brought down Andreas Weimann in the area and was dismissed, yet the hosts failed to benefit as substitute goalkeeper Marco Bizot saved Raphael Holzhauser's resulting penalty.
Austria pushed for the equaliser with their man advantage, and though Christopher Drazan hit the woodwork, the home side could not convert any of their numerous chances.
