Philipp Hofmann struck three minutes from time to earn Germany a point in a thrilling end to their UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifier in Podgorica.

Montenegro appeared set for a fine victory when they led through Stefan Mugoša's 50th-minute penalty. A straight red card for substitute Aleksandar Boljević tilted the balance in the visitors' favour, however, and Hofmann quickly capitalised as he headed in Moritz Leitner's free-kick. The FC Schalke 04 forward very nearly grabbed a winner too, Danijel Petković tipping his last-gasp header against the bar.

The draw meant an end to Germany's 100% start to Group 6 but they remain six points clear of Montenegro, their nearest rivals. Coach Horst Hrubesch may have settled for that after a first half in which his side dominated possession but always looked susceptible on the couner. Luka Djordjević and Mugoša both spurned golden opportunities before Montenegro forged ahead, Mugoša converting from the spot after Antonio Rüdiger impeded Darko Zorić.

Germany, who had missed a big chance themselves through substitute Leonardo Bittencourt moments before, were spurred into action. Bittencourt was their main threat, hitting the post 18 minutes from time, yet once Boljević saw red for a foul on Amin Younes, it was Hofmann that took centre stage.
