"I know they are capable of achieving success in Poland in June," said Aidy Boothroyd after being named manager of England Under-21s on a permanent basis.

Aidy Boothroyd has been confirmed as permanent manager of the England Under-21s.

Boothroyd took charge on an interim basis in September when incumbent Gareth Southgate – initially as a caretaker – was promoted to the senior team. The Young Lions secured qualification for this summer's finals in Poland in Boothroyd's first game at the helm, a 1-0 victory in Kazakhstan.

"I am honoured to be given the task of leading England into the U21 European Championship," said Boothroyd, who was coaching England U19s before his promotion. "Having worked closely with this group of players in recent months, I know they are capable of achieving success in Poland in June.

"They have learned a lot from recent tournament experiences and this summer will be the next chapter of their development as an international player."

Boothroyd counts Watford and Coventry among his former employers. His Football Association (FA) contract runs until 2020.
