Montenegro maintained their grip on second place in UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying Group 6 after two goals in three minutes dashed the Republic of Ireland's hopes of a win in Dublin.

Luka Djordjević ran pretty much the full length of the pitch on 75 minutes to equalise with a low strike from 20 metres, and Stefan Mugoša put the ball past Sean McDermott again two minutes later after the home defence failed to clear Branislav Janković's cross. Sean McGinty's late dismissal for a second bookable offence added to the hosts' frustration.

Noel King's Ireland had made the early running and were ahead on 11 minutes, Matthew Doherty meeting Anthony Forde's corner with a bullet header. Sean Murray missed from a good position soon afterwards, and Danijel Petković had to save from Jeffrey Hendrick just past the hour, before decent efforts from Mugoša and Marko Vukčević signalled Montenegro's resurgence. Petković nonetheless earned a substantial share of the credit for the victory, saving from Shane Duffy and Forde in the space of two minutes as the Irish launched a series of corners.
