Long wait over for Wales

A 71st-minute goal by Kevin Gall brought Wales success in Group 9 and their first win in 27 attempts.

A 71st-minute goal by Kevin Gall ended an appalling run by the Wales Under-21 team at the Shafa stadium in Baku.

First win in 27
The Bristol Rovers FC striker steered in the only goal against Azerbaijan in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifier to give the young Dragons their first victory in 27 internationals, spanning over five years. The winning margin would have been greater had a 25-metre shot by Notts County FC's Michael Brough not cannoned back off the crossbar in the closing stages.

Coach's reaction
The victory lifts Wales to third in Group 9 and keeps Azerbaijan bottom of the section. Wales coach Jimmy Shoulder said: "We have maturity in our side because many of the boys are playing first-team football at their clubs. There are a few who could go on to follow Craig Bellamy, Simon Davies, Danny Gabbidon and Robert Earnshaw into the senior side."
