Peerless Portugal stride on

Portugal 4-0 Luxembourg The Portuguese made it eight wins from eight in Portimao, but scored three of their goals late on.

Portugal, the first team to qualify for the UEFA Under-21 European Championship play-offs, are close to winning Group 3 after sweeping aside Luxembourg 4-0 tonight.

Good start

The impetus was with the home side from the start and Sporting Club de Portugal forward Silvestre Varela went close to breaking the deadlock on five minutes, beating three defenders before hitting a lob which was repelled by Laurent Mond. The inevitable opening goal came ten minutes later when Paulo Sérgio rose above everyone to head in João Pereira's corner.

Late flourish
Portugal dominated but had to wait until the 70th minute to make the game safe as Varela collected the ball, jinked past his marker in the area and left Mond with no chance. The final two goals arrived in the final two minutes, Quaresma and João Pereira providing the gloss.

Russian tests
Portugal face second-place Russia on Tuesday, knowing a draw will be enough to win the pool. Luxembourg remain bottom with one point from eight games.
