Degen seals Swiss passage

Republic of Ireland 0-1 Switzerland David Degen's 13th-minute goal was enough to see the visitors through to the play-offs.

Switzerland are through to the UEFA European Under-21 Championship play-offs after a 1-0 win in the Republic of Ireland secured them the runners-up slot in Group 4.

Only goal
Anything other than a win would have handed second place to Israel, but David Degen scored what proved to be the only goal of the game after just 13 minutes, cutting across Paul McShane before beating goalkeeper Wayne Henderson with a low shot from deep inside the Irish penalty area.

Missed opportunities
However, the Swiss were lucky to escape with a victory as their opponents passed up a number of chances to equalise. Joseph O'Brien had two shots just off target either side of Degen's goal, and goalkeeper Diego Benaglio had to be alert to block Steven Ward's effort just before the interval.

Terrific saves
Donald Givens' side kept up the pressure in the second period, and Benaglio was forced to make a full-length, diving save to deny a header from John Fitzgerald. However, his opposite number Henderson pulled off perhaps the save of the night when he fended off a fierce volley from Reto Ziegler with eight minutes remaining.
