Iceland put the freeze on Sweden

Sweden 1-4 Iceland A dismal defeat against their Nordic neighbours denied Sweden a place in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship play-offs.

Sweden's UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying came to a sticky end as they missed out on the play-offs with a shock 4-1 defeat at home against Iceland.

Disastrous result
A win against their Nordic neighbours would have seen them steal the runners up slot in Group 8 from Hungary, who could only draw 2-2 at home against group winners Croatia tonight, but instead Sweden were humbled at home by an Iceland side who had previously beaten them 3-1 in Grindavik.

Sveinsson double
Iceland's evening got off to a good start in Eskilstuna as Hördur Sveinsson opened the scoring for the visitors after 40 minutes, and Sweden were dealt a further blow two minutes into first-half added time when the same player doubled Iceland's advantage.

Added-time goals
Matters went from bad to worse midway through the second period as Bjarni Vidarsson beat Sweden goalkeeper Christoffer Källkvist for a third time. Alexander Farnerud pulled a goal back for the Swedes in added time, but substitute Gardar Gunnlaugsson subsequently scored a fourth for Iceland.
