Gareth Southgate, England manager
There aren't any questions about the way we played between the penalty boxes. We created a lot of chances and have not been able to take them until the last minute. Two minutes of madness in terms of our defending has cost us the game but that is the harsh reality of tournament football. The experience has been a brilliant one for our young players but we've not been able to get through to the semi-final
It would be wrong to single out [Danny Ings' early miss]. We've created a lot of chances and had some good attempts on goal that the keeper has saved. On another night we'd maybe score three or four and have a scoreline that is completely different but it is at both ends that we haven't been able to do the job tonight.
There's so little between these teams at the tournament. It comes down to small details and concentration. Everyone makes defensive errors but tonight they were punished for them. I'd like to stay on but in the end it's not my decision. What we've done over the last two years has progressed this team, especially the style of football.
Jack Butland, England captain
It doesn't matter how well you play, you've got to be ruthless at either end. Two sloppy goals against a team like this is something you can't accept and that was the end of our tournament. You have to perform at either end and make every chance you have count. At the back you have to be just as ruthless, we weren't that. It was in our hands to get through and we didn't perform.
Luigi Di Biagio, Italy coach
I am proud of my boys and of what they have done. It feels bad because the lads kept at it right to the end. Ultimately, the important thing was that we didn't do better in the first game. At 1-0 I was so pleased but then we had the despair of all the boys because a dream like that doesn't come along every day. It's obviously a bitter pill not to go to Rio. I wanted to go to Rio as coach but I think we've played the best football in this competition.
My future depends on the federation, but everyone knows the work I do.We cannot forget where we have come from – from the match against Belgium in Rieti [a defeat in September 2013] we have grown tremendously.
Marco Benassi, Italy midfielder
We have produced another great performance but it is not enough. It is a big disappointment above all because we believed right until the end. We didn't start well against Sweden but from that moment on we played a great game against Portugal and today we did the same. It's just a shame about the other result.
Daniele Rugani, Italy defender
I am bitter and very sad because it hurts to go out having played a match like this. We really gave everything tonight. After the first match we stayed united and we have showed that we are a group of real men. It's a pity that we've not been rewarded for our efforts tonight but we can only accept the outcome.
