Romania salvage a point against Germany

Romania 2-2 Germany
Romario Benzar's fine effort from distance ensured a share of the spoils in the first international fixture to be staged in Giurgiu.

Romario Benzar's fine effort from distance secured a share of the points as Romania held Germany in a thrilling UEFA European Under-21 Championship Group 6 game.

The FC Viitorul Constanţa midfielder's strike from 20 metres restored parity 15 minutes from the end of the first international match ever staged in Giurgiu, a small town near the Bulgarian border. It was Germany's second draw in the space of five days, but they remain comfortably clear of the chasing pack.

Romania rode their luck early on, with Leonardo Bittencourt hitting the post after dribbling past goalkeeper Laurenţiu Brănescu, before Claudiu Bumba slid them in front from Mihai Roman's low cross. However, their lead lasted just five minutes, with Philipp Hofmann levelling from the penalty spot after Ionuţ Peteleu was penalised for a foul.

Although Brănescu saved from Yunnus Malli after the interval, Germany were ahead moments later, Antonio Rüdiger meeting Amin Younes's cross from the right with a powerful header. Benzar, however, got Bogdan Stelea's side back into the game towards the finish. There was more drama at the death, with Bernd Leno saving from Bumba, and Younes finding the frame of the goal at the other end.
