UEFA Women's Champions League holders VfL Wolfsburg have completed the signing of Sweden defender Nilla Fischer from Linköpings FC.

The clubs have been in talks for some time regarding the former Vittsjö GIK, Kristianstads DFF and FC Malmö player. However, according to a Linköping statement, two recent Damallsvenskan defeats, significantly reducing their chances of European qualification, persuaded them to release Fischer after this Sunday's fixture against Piteå IF, with all terms undisclosed.

She will then link up with Wolfsburg in Austria and coach Ralf Kellermann said: "We are happy to be able to integrate Nilla into the team in our training camp and in France [where they play in a friendly tournament later this month]."

Fischer, 29, has been capped over 100 times by Sweden and converted from her former midfield position to help the UEFA Women's EURO 2013 hosts reach the semi-finals last month – the centre-back winning the adidas Silver Boot as second top scorer into the bargain. She was seventh in the voting for the inaugural UEFA Best Women's Player in Europe Award.

"I've enjoyed working at LFC fantastically well and they are a club I can think of going back to," Fischer said. "I am grateful that they have managed to resolve this now and I wish LFC all the best in the future."

Wolfsburg begin the defence of their German title on 7 September, three days after they discover their UEFA Women's Champions League round of 32 opponents for the tie in October. Other summer recruits include goalkeeper Almuth Schult, defenders Peggy Kuznik and Noelle Maritz and forward Desiré Oparanozie.
