Joy for history-making Glasgow after escape act

Glasgow City FC are revelling in another fine comeback as they became the first Scottish team to reach the UEFA Women's Champions League quarter-finals.

Glasgow joy after historic win

Glasgow City FC pulled off a stunning coup on Wednesday, scoring twice in the last nine minutes to edge out FC Zürich Frauen and become the first Scottish team to reach the UEFA Women's Champions League quarter-finals. As visiting boss Dorjee Tsawa pondered how his team had not gone through, Glasgow goalscorer Joanne Love and manager Eddie Wolecki Black marvelled in their side's second Houdini act in as many rounds.

Joanne Love, Glasgow City midfielder
It's quite unbelievable actually, to come back twice. After the last round, we thought we had ridden our luck a little bit. It just shows the spirit of these girls. I'm so proud. I was so happy the ball went in the net for my goal – I wasn't really concerned that it was myself who scored. We knew we needed another one so we just kept on pushing on and look for the next one.

We showed great spirit, we know what we're capable of and what a great football side we are. We have no preferences as such [for the next round]. We know we're going to come up against some right tough opposition so hopefully we can up our game before then. We have a little bit of time now to come together and work towards that.

Eddie Wolecki Black, Glasgow City manager
We're making a habit of it [comeback victories]. The last time was the same and this time there was even less time to turn round the situation so we're obviously very, very happy. When you have a group of players like that, that never give in, it makes it a wee bit easier for the manager. All the praise has to go to them, absolutely.

The next round is a long way off, so we just have to wait and see where it goes and where it takes us. But we're just going to savour tonight rather than look forward right now. At this stage, you're going to get a really good side no matter what so we'll just have to take what we get and hopefully we'll put in a very, very good performance over two legs.

It's historic for Scotland. No Scottish team has ever gone to the quarter-finals ... so I suppose it's a great honour for everybody and we will be certainly looking forward to the quarter-finals.

Dorjee Tsawa, Zürich coach
It's a difficult defeat to take in. Our team played very well and deserved to win and qualify for the next round. I don't think there was any physical difference. We were the better team but we made some individual mistakes which led to the [Glasgow] goals. We played well, we played better and we deserved to win. It was a good team effort.

The quarter-final draw takes place next Wednesday and will be streamed live here from 13.00CET.
