Martina Müller scored a UEFA Women's Champions League final winner for the second year running to give VfL Wolfsburg a truly thrilling victory against Tyresö FF.

Tyresö, like Wolfsburg last year facing the holders as debutants, were two up at the break through two goals in three minutes from Marta and Verónica Boquete, and just as swiftly Alexandra Popp and Martina Müller levelled. Marta restored the lead, substitute Verena Faisst made it 3-3 before Müller, which her tenth goal of the campaign, settled matters with ten minutes left.

Wolfsburg were missing injured midfielder pair Zsanett Jakabfi and Lina Magull but did have defender Josephine Henning fit, and she made an early saving tackle on Christen Press. Tyresö, able to start with Spain striker Boquete alongside Press and Marta in their front three after a hamstring injury, certainly started the brighter, Wolfsburg pinned back as they were for much of last year's final in London before beating holders Olympique Lyonnais 1-0 with a Müller penalty.

However, by the tenth minute Wolfsburg were beginning to press, Popp heading an Anna Blässe cross wide. Lena Goessling, 2013 final player of the match, sustained a bloody right cheek after a collision with Lisa Dahlqvist and re-emerged with a patch. Wolfsburg came close again when player of the match Nadine Kessler won the ball but Müller could not turn her centre past Carola Söberg, preferred in the Tyresö goal to Tinja-Riikka Korpela.

Instead it was at the other end where the deadlock was broken, Boquete winning the ball and slipping through Marta to beat three defenders and roll her shot past Almuth Schult, the Brazilian's fifth goal in European finals. Two minutes later Schult was beaten again, Christen Press drawing the Wolfsburg defence with a diagonal run to the left byline and looping a cross volleyed in by Boquete. Wolfsburg fought to get back in the game and in quick succession Söberg denied both Müller and Selina Wagner.

Faisst, 25 today, replaced Wagner at the interval, and within 80 seconds Popp had headed in Blässe's cross from the right for a revitalised Wolfsburg. Müller was then sent clear but Söberg denied her one-on-one. Blässe broke again, but Kessler could not beat Meghan Klingenberg on the line. However, the equaliser came on 53 minutes when Müller again broke from halfway and coolly finished.

Advantage Wolfsburg? Marta had other ideas, receiving the ball in the box, pulling back then curling in a shot of geometric beauty. Still Wolfsburg pushed, though, and when Klingenberg limped off injured, before she could be replaced Popp set up birthday girl Faisst to level again with a low finish.

That set up a grandstand finish, and just as 12 months ago Müller had the final word, bundling in after a brilliant mazy dribble from captain Kessler. Unlike Wolfsburg, Tyresö could find no response and Germany made it eight wins in 13 European seasons.
