Switzerland take precious point

Switzerland fought back to earn a point against the Netherlands in their qualifier for the UEFA Women's EURO 2009™ championships in Finland in front of 2000 fans.

Switzerland fought back to earn a point in their qualifier for the UEFA Women's EURO 2009™ championships in Finland. In front of a crowd of 2m000 in Zug, Switzerland took a point to move them to the top of Group 4 after starting the campaign with a 1-0 win against Belgium.

Perfect start
It was the visitors from the Netherlands who got off to the perfect start when, with eleven minutes played, Manon Melis scored the opening goal. Switzerland forced their way back into the match via Nicole Schäpper's equaliser eight minutes before the interval.

Lucky escape
Switzerland had a lucky escape with Netherland's Liesbeth Michelsen failing to hold her nerve from the spot after being awarded a penalty for handball just two minutes after the interval. Nevertheless, all looked lost for the hosts when substitute Sabine van Eijck made it 2-1 to the Netherlands just five minutes from time.

Meyer goal
Switzerland never gave up though and were rewarded for their efforts in the third minute of added time when Isabelle Meyer reacted quickest during a goalmouth scramble following a corner. Meyer's late strike earned her team an important point ahead of their most difficult qualifying game on 23 August, when they take on reigning European and World Champions Germany in Koblenz.
