England will be in a familiar situation when they take on Russia in Linkoping on Monday, and Jill Scott is confident they can repeat their heroics of four years ago.

At UEFA Women's EURO 2009, England lost their opener 2-1 to Italy and faced a must-win game against Russia. Two down early on, England came back to prevail 3-2 and eventually reached the final with Scott's extra-time winner against the Netherlands. Now, having begun the 2013 finals with a heart-breaking 3-2 defeat by Spain, England meet Russia again and Everton LFC midfielder Scott spoke to UEFA.com about making another strong recovery and the relaxed mood of the squad in their scenic central Linkoping base.

UEFA.com: What are your reflections now on the Spain game?

Jill Scott: I think we know we could have played a lot better. We've analysed the match now and we've put it to bed. You can only change the future, not the past. We just want to focus on Russia now; the girls are in a good mood going into the game.

We've looked at the game and there were quite a few positives. We kept our shape quite well at times, but obviously we need to be better in possession of the ball. We frustrated Spain at times but we gave the ball away too easily. If we can use that as our foundation and get better with every game, I'm sure we'll be fine.

UEFA.com: Four years ago, you lost your opening game and then beat Russia. Is that a good omen?

Scott: In EURO 2009, we got beat by Italy in the opening game and coincidentally enough had to beat Russia to be in it. We find ourselves in the same situation again so hopefully we can draw on our past experiences and use that to overcome the next game.

I wasn't playing in that [2009] game, but it was very tense and in the first 20 minutes we were 2-0 down. But again the team showed great character in coming back. Obviously we don't want to find ourselves in that position again and we're hoping to start the game on the front foot and take the game to them.

UEFA.com: How have Russia changed since?

Scott: I think they have a lot of similar players, players that have changed positions. They have a lot of speed within the team and are technically very good, very strong, so we know it's definitely not going to be an easy game. But we also know if we play better than we did against Spain we can give them a run for their money.

UEFA.com: You are based in central Linkoping for the group stage. How are you enjoying that?

Scott: We really like it. Where the hotel is, there's a lovely beach area outside. It's nice our friends and family can come and chill out. The weather's been nice, but we are trying to stay out of the sun as much as possible; we know how draining it can be. It just relaxes the girls a lot being in an area like this. There's some nice coffee shops and it's just about switching off at times. Then when it's time for training you are motivated to train at your best.

UEFA.com: And you have been to the fan zone too...

Scott: We've been there last night and the first night just to watch the other games on the big screens. It's a really good atmosphere and it's nice the locals come up and wish you luck for the game. It gives you a lift if you are feeling down about the result.
