Italy consolation
Although they defeated Italy and China in their opening matches, Norway still needed a win against the US, but instead fell to second-half goals by Natasha Kai, Abby Wambach, Heather O'Reilly and substitute Amy Rodriguez. Italy secured third place in Group B as goals from Pamela Conti and Patrizia Panico gave them a 2-0 win against China.

Germany win
Denmark will hope to reverse their 2007 final defeat by the US when they meet again on Wednesday, and they followed up 1-0 victories against Germany and Sweden with a similar win versus UEFA WOMEN'S EURO 2009™ hosts Finland, Cathrine Paaske-Sørensen striking for the second game running in the 50th minute. Germany earned a place in the bronze medal match against Norway as they finished second in the pool by beating Sweden 2-0, Sandra Smisek opening the scoring on 25 minutes and Birgit Prinz adding a late penalty. Sweden will face Italy for fifth place overall.

Iceland step up
Iceland ended top of Group C by defeating Portugal 3-0, and now take on Finland for seventh position while the hosts face China for ninth spot. The Republic of Ireland got off the mark with a 1-0 victory against Poland and the pair play again in two days time.
