Spain moved to within a point of the second-placed Czech Republic in their UEFA WOMEN'S EURO 2009™ qualifying group following a comprehensive 6-1 victory over Belarus in Madrid.

Early advantage
The hosts took the lead after 13 minutes when Erika Vazquez Morales's low strike beat Belarus goalkeeper Svitlana Novikava. Spain then doubled their tally on the half-hour mark through Ana Romero's long-range effort. Aksana Shpak's 37th minute free-kick breathed life into a Belarus team that had won just one of their four previous group encounters, but the fightback ended when Vazquez Morales collected her second shortly before the break.

Convincing scoreline
Esther Cuesta hit Spain's fourth with 19 minutes left to play, Maria José made it 5-1 with a minute of normal time remaining and Ana Romero scored her second in stoppage time. Spain – who are third in the Group 1 standings, three points behind section leaders England – play the Czech Republic in their next game on Thursday 8 May.
