Dutch delight after Melis winner

Wales 0-1 Netherlands A Manon Melis goal early in the second half kept the Netherlands' play-off hopes in their own hands with three Group 4 games left.

A Manon Melis goal early in the second half in Wales lifted the Netherlands up to second place in UEFA WOMEN'S EURO 2009™ Group 4.

Wales denied
At the weekend Wales, in their first top-level women's senior competition for nearly two decade, were unlucky not to get off the mark with a narrow 1-0 defeat by Belgium and suffered a similar fate in Newport tonight. The home side had the best chance of the first half through Jayne Ludlow, but three minutes after the interval Karin Stevens set up Melis for what proved the winner.

Play-off aim
Netherlands coach Vera Pauw said: "This was a crucial victory," and the group standings bear that out. Her team leapfrogged Belgium and Switzerland to move into second, though both those sides have a game in hand. Germany, eight points clear, look uncatchable, but the Netherlands, who now meet Belgium twice and welcome Switzerland in their three remaining fixtures, have it in their own hands to finish second and claim a guaranteed play-off spot. Wales complete their campaign with trips to Switzerland and Germany in May.
