Belgium and the Netherlands had to settle for a point apiece after a 2-2 draw in their UEFA WOMEN'S EURO 2009™ qualifier.
The Low Countries derby, played in Belgian town Eisden-Maasmechelen located just a few kilometres from the Dutch border, held even more significance than usual with just a point separating the sides and the home team due to play Switzerland – who are wedged between them in Group 4 – on Sunday. Kristel Verelst gave Belgium the lead twice during the game but each time they were pegged back by the visitors.
Verelst opened the scoring five minutes before half-time with an excellent lob but FC Utrecht midfielder Anouk Hoogendijk replied straight away for Vera Pauw's side. Twelve minutes after the break FCL Rapide Wezemaal forward Verelst struck again and it looked enough to give the home team all three points but Manon Melis earned the Dutch a draw which leaves them second behind section leaders Germany, with Belgium a further point back having played a game less.
