Everything to play for as WU17 EURO resumes

Ominously for their Women's U17 Group B rivals, Germany and Spain are chasing first wins on Saturday, when the hosts take on England and Norway play catch-up in Group A.

Group A
 Belarus 1-5 Serbia
England 3-2 Norway

Belarus v England (16.00 local time/15.00CET); City Stadium, Slutsk
If Irina Bulygina's debutants endured a painful introduction to the rigours of WU17 EURO football on Wednesday, notwithstanding a historic goal from Karolina Zhitko, their second attempt may prove even more demanding. John Griffiths's fit and flexible England caught the eye in the five-goal thriller with Norway, the front three of Niamh Charles, Ellie Brazil and Alessia Russo looking particularly impressive. Worse still for the hosts, England welcome back strike ace Georgia Stanway, together with Hannah Cain, from suspension.

Serbia v Norway (16.00 local*); Gorodskoi Stadium, Borisov
Norway coach Lena Tyriberget believes her charges can do better than illustrated in midweek, when captain Frida Maanum and forward Andrea Norheim at least hinted at more to come from the Scandinavians. However, they will want to tighten up defensively in view of Serbia's five-goal salvo; five different players found the net for Suzana Stanojević's tournament newcomers. Indeed, the coach's stated ambition of the semi-finals may quickly become a reality if this potentially pivotal game goes their way.

Group B
Italy 0-0 Czech Republic
Germany 2-2 Spain

Italy v Germany (16.00 local*); Torpedo Stadium, Zhodino
Rita Guarino's team drew a blank in their tournament opener, a less than ideal start for the 2013/14 bronze medallists. All their tactical flexibility and mental strength will now be required in the face of the perennial German powerhouse, though the attacking nous of Benedetta Glionna and Giada Greggi provides hope. Germany boss Anouschka Bernhard has skipper Janina Minge back from her ban – which is precisely what defender Caroline Siems, the only player booked on matchday one, must strive to avoid.

Czech Republic v Spain (16.00 local*); Traktor Stadium, Minsk
Something of an unknown quantity entering their finals debut, Karel Rada's Czech side stood firm against the Italians and in fact revealed a strong spine, from centre-back through to centre-forward via holding midfielder Kamila Dubcová. What better examination next than an encounter with the holders. María Antonia Is's charges are always hard to handle in the transition and will be eager to register that first victory here in Belarus.
