France dig deep to reach final

Early domination
France dominated the first half without finding a way past Davey in the England goal. Pauline Crammer delivered a free-kick into Davey's arms from 25 metres, then Marina Makanza ran from the halfway line past three English defenders before shooting wide from just inside the penalty area. Solène Barbance's strike from the edge of the box looked to have broken the deadlock on the quarter-hour only for Davey to turn the ball around the post at full stretch. Léa Rubio and Crammer were denied next as the French grew frustrated at their failure to use the strong breeze to their advantage.

England lead
Having failed to threaten Laëtitia Philippe's goal in the opening period, England actually took the lead 60 seconds into the second half when Stephanie Marsh lofted a left-footed free-kick over the France wall and into the net. France's response, however, was almost immediate. Sarah Wiltshire was penalised for fouling Makanza inside the area and Crammer stepped up to pick her spot to the left of Davey after 49 minutes.

Davey heroic
Sergent's side pressed for a second goal, with substitute Marine Augis firing across the face of goal after 58 minutes before Makanza's effort grazed the top of the crossbar soon afterwards. Then in the dying minutes, Davey made three outstanding stops to take the game to extra time, saving with her feet from Inès Jaurena and diving to her left to palm Léa Rubio's attempt over, before frustrating substitute Augis from ten metres. England's Jessica Holbrook found the net in extra time, following Danielle Carter's clever through ball, but was denied by an offside call. France then put the match beyond their opponents, Augis beating Davey with a low shot four minutes into the second period of extra time before Makanza scored from the penalty spot after being held back by Gemma Bonner.
