Both sides beat Croatia and Romania in their opening games to take control of first qualifying round Group 9. Spain won the decider to 2-1 to end top but Wales will be one of the six runners-up with the best record against the top three in their group, Scotland falling out of the running.
Wales were top after the opening day as they beat Romania 7-0. Rachel Rowe and Sharla Passierello both scored twice in the first 27 minutes and Emily Brown added two more after the break, the latter a penalty following an Elena Olteanu own goal. Nieves Motoso, Amanda Sampedro and Yazmina Rodríguez were on target in the first half as Spain beat Croatia 3-0.
The lead changed hands two days later after Spain matched Wales's scoreline against Romania. Cristina Martin-Prieto and Leire Fernandez scored in the first half, the latter also registering after the break alongside Anabel Martínez, Amaya Lambarri and Nieves. Wales fell behind on goal difference as they needed an injury-time Nia Jones goal to defeat Croatia 1-0.
Dannielle Willcok put Wales ahead nine minutes into their game with Spain, but Amanda equalised and substitute Leticia Mendez won the game with four minutes left. Croatia finished third although their hopes of victory against Romania were dashed when Tomislava Matijević's early opener was cancelled out by a 63rd-minute Stefania Iulia Vatafu penalty.
