Victorious coach Ralf Peter said scoring the first goal enabled his team to relax as Germany defeated France 3-0 to win the inaugural UEFA European Women's Under-17 Championship final on Friday. Opposite number Gérard Sergent was gracious in defeat, and hopes the sides will meet again in the final of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in New Zealand later this year. uefa.com brings you the reaction from Nyon, Switzerland.
Ralf Peter, Germany coach
We are very happy with this victory. I am very proud of my team, we were extremely focused, particularly in defence. This is why I have brought our goalkeeper to the conference, as she didn't concede a goal in both of our matches here and therefore made an important contribution to our success. The opening goal was important for us, as this allowed us to be a bit more relaxed. We know France are a very good side as we lost to them at last year's Nordic Cup, so we're very pleased to come through this very difficult match. In the second half we justified the score with a solid performance.
Gérard Sergent, France coach
I would like to congratulate Germany for their victory. I don't have any regrets today as Germany were simply stronger than us. Our players did their best, and this was a positive campaign overall. You have to play in finals to get experience. Now we hope to win the next one – maybe we will meet our German friends again in the World Cup final, and maybe on that occasion we will be luckier.
Anna Felicitas Sarholz, Germany goalkeeper
We're very happy, and I'm very pleased with my defenders. For the moment I don't really know what to say, I am simply overwhelmed by the victory. I probably just need to digest this match, then I will realise what we have achieved here.
Adeline Rousseau, France defender
We are obviously very disappointed, but I think Germany were stronger than us. We didn't manage to play the way we planned, and they were probably a bit fresher than us as we played extra time on Tuesday.
