Germany coach Ralf Peter watched his side retain the UEFA European Women's Under-17 Championship title with a 7-0 defeat of Spain – a win that included five Kyra Malinowski goals – but said it could all have been different had they conceded in the first minute. He was also delighted that they had overcome the pressure of being hot favourites. Spain's Ángel Vilda conceded that Germany were a better team and admitted they had already given a lot in beating Norway 2-0 on Monday to reach the final.

Ralf Peter, Germany coach
We have to be honest – Spain had a huge chance early on which our goalkeeper saved brilliantly. If they had scored, the game could have developed differently. However, after that we gained control of the game and played some excellent football, especially when we were attacking. We created some great chances and cashed in on some of them. We are all happy today because we played the kind of football everybody, including the fans that were here today, wants to see. I never told Kyra to move back into midfield [after her fourth goal made it 5-0]. She is a team player and she wanted to set up some goals for her team-mates after being so successful herself. But that is the kind of player she is and that is something I was really happy to see.

I do not suffer so much under the pressure of being 'the parent' because I was already here last year when we won. Obviously, we went into the tournament as the favourites and this team wanted to win the title. Therefore, it was quite plain to see that they felt the pressure and they did look nervous in the first few minutes but now the pressure is gone and I am delighted for the team. I hope a few of these players go on to represent Germany at other levels. There is a lot of competition in Germany but this bunch of girls is very talented. I am convinced that a few of them will make it to the full national team if they keep working hard.

Ángel Vilda, Spain coach
We have to accept that Germany were clearly the better team. They are a strong team, we knew they would be, but we feel that there was not a margin of seven goals between us. We had given a lot of ourselves against Norway in the semi-final, physically and mentally, and the two first goals today were very bad for us. Of course the girls will learn from this, it's the first time players have been in a final and they've played against a fine team over 80 minutes. This experience will certainly help the players in the future.

Esther González, Spain striker
I don't think the result would have changed had I scored from the chance in the first minute. I've enjoyed this adventure, we have played many matches together, we have reached a final, and we will not forget this.
