Perfect Scotland lead the way

Scotland won UEFA European Women's Under-17 Championship first qualifying round Group 8 as they defeated Hungary on the final day to go through.

Six-goal wins
Which two teams would dominate the mini-tournament in Croatia became clear after Matchday 1 when Scotland and Hungary both won 6-0. Scotland defeated Northern Ireland as Emma Mitchell's early goal was added to before the break twice by Sarah Crilly, and Lauren McMurchie, Lisa Evans and substitute Angela Waite confirmed the victory. Dóra Rapp, Sára Krisztin and Bettina Buris all socred twice in Hungary's win against Croatia. The hosts were level with Scotland at half-time two days later but in the second period Crilly scored twice and Mitchell and Waite also found the target to secure a 4-0 success. That put them ahead of Hungary on goal difference after Anita Szabo and Szandra Váradi secured a 2-0 win against Northern Ireland.

Scotland prevail
To ensure they pipped Scotland to an automatic place in the second qualifying round, Hungary needed a final-day victory and took a 24th-minute lead through Papp. But Evans equalised within four minutes and early in the second half Crilly and Waite kept up their scoring runs to ensure first place with a 3-1 win. Hungary must now wait to see if their record against Scotland and Northern Ireland, who drew 0-0 with Croatia to finish third, will be enough to make them one of the six runners-up with the best record against the other teams in the top three of their pool - with two of ten mini-tournament still to play. Scotland manager Tony Gervaise said: "Hungary won both their first matches so they were eager to win the match, however it just came down to which team wanted it more and it was Scotland.".
