The UEFA European Women's Under-17 Championship second qualifying round gets under way on Wednesday with two of the four finalists in last year's inaugural edition involved in the first group to kick off.

June finals
In all, four one-venue mini-tournaments will be played before the round ends on 14 April, with only the group winners to progress to the finals in Nyon, Switzerland from 22 to 25 June 2009. That was also the venue last season when France and Denmark finished second and third respectively, and the pair are matched in Group 4 with hosts the Netherlands and Wales, all among 16 teams to have emerged from the 40 sides that entered the first qualifying round in the autumn.

Germany defence
On 5 April another of last year's semi-finalists, England, begin Group 2 against two sides they beat at this stage in 2007/08, the Czech Republic and Belgium, who will host a pool also involving Spain. One new finalist will emerge from Group 1, running from 8 to 13 April, with Ukraine, Norway and Sweden visiting F.Y.R. Macedonia. A day later holders Germany put their title on the line in Hungary, with Group 3 also including Russia and Switzerland who are aiming to earn a place in the finals on home soil.
