Spain surge clinches qualification

Spain are the second team to book their place in the UEFA European Women's Under-17 Championship finals after beating the Czech Republic 3-1 to clinch a berth in Nyon, Switzerland from 22-25 June.

Spain prevail
Ahead of their opponents on goal difference ahead of their deciding game in second qualifying round Group 2 in Belgium, Spain only needed a draw to ensure they moved into the semi-finals. Aneta Smidrkalová gave the Czech Republic a second-minute lead but their celebrations had barely died down when Amanda Sampedro equalised. Amaya Lambarri made it 2-1 on 18 minutes and Esther González put the result beyond doubt with five minutes left. England, fourth in last year's finals, ended this mini-tournament in third after a 1-1 draw with Belgium, a strike from Tine Schrijvers cancelled out by fellow substitute Lauren Bruton five minutes before the end.

Rivals draw
Ángel Vilda's side must wait to find out their semi-final opposition after Norway and Sweden drew their second Group 1 game 0-0. Either of the neighbours had the possibility of clinching qualification with a match to spare on Friday but they are both now only a point ahead of Ukraine, who defeated hosts FYR Macedonia 5-2.

Monday deciders
Oksana Yakovyshyn struck twice for Ukraine in the first 24 minutes either side of a Darya Vorontsova goal but Gentjana Rochi pulled one back before the break. Vorontsova extended the lead and although Natasa Andonova reduced arrears, substitute Karina Sorokina had the final word with two minutes to go. In Monday's deciders, Ukraine must beat Norway and hope Sweden do not defeat FYR Macedonia if they are to pip both Nordic rivals. Leaders Norway's goal difference is currently two better than Sweden.

Germany in position
France had previously ensured a finals place and will not discover their last-four opponents until Group 3 concludes in Hungary on Tuesday. Germany, who beat France in the inaugural 2008 final, are in pole position to meet them again after following up a 4-0 defeat of Russia with a 6-0 win against Hungary. Nicole Rolser, Ramona Petzelberger, Lynn Mester, Laura Vetterlein and Kyra Malinowski all scored in the first 26 minutes and Malinowski make it six late on. Switzerland also have a perfect record after a 2-1 win against Russia with two Cora Canetta goals but need to beat Germany on Tuesday to earn a finals campaign on home soil.
