Big names book their places

Holders Germany were among the teams to move through to the UEFA European Women's Under-19 Championship second qualifying round tonight as the opening stage ended. The top pair from the eleven groups will go into December's draw along with the two third-placed finishers with the best record against the teams first and second in their pool, their identity to be confirmed on Wednesday. uefa.com rounds up the action from the 44 teams who began the round hoping for a place in France next July.

Group 1
Iceland only needed a point against mini-tournament hosts Portugal to progress but ensured first place with a 3-2 victory, first-half goals from Elínborg Ingvarsdóttir, Laufey Björnsdóttir and Jóna Kristín Hauksdóttir decisive. However, Greece's 1-0 win against Romania allowed Portugal to go through as they had the best record in a three-way head-to-head between that trio. Romania finished third but their three points against Portugal on Saturday gives them hope of joining them.

Group 2
Austria held hosts Poland 1-1 to pick up the point they needed to progress as group winners. The draw was enough for Poland, last season's first-time qualifiers, to finish second as Bulgaria lost 4-0 to previously point-less Turkey.

Group 3
This group concluded on Monday with Hungary drawing 1-1 with Sweden to finish top ahead of their rivals, both teams having already ensured their place in the next stage. Kazakhstan were third after Georgia withdrew.

Group 4
Italy and Russia were already through, and Corrado Corradini's side beat the 2005 champions and mini-tournament hosts to first place on goal difference with a 1-1 draw. Israel defeated Northern Ireland 4-3 for third spot.

Group 5
Finland had booked their progress already but beat Serbia 1-0 to seal top spot. Belarus delighted the impressive home crowd with a 3-0 defeat of Estonia. Although Serbia finished second, above the hosts on goal difference, Belarus will hope that the 0-0 draw against their rivals on the opening day will aid their cause to be one of the best third-placed teams.

Group 6
Denmark defeated Belgium 2-1 for first place, but both teams were already through. Bosnia-Herzegovina produced the same scoreline against Latvia to ensure the home team finished third.

Group 7
Scotland's 2-2 draw with Ukraine meant they finished ahead of their fellow qualifiers on goal difference. Azerbaijan finished third in similar style after they too shared four goals with Armenia.

Group 8
The Republic of Ireland saw a two-goal half-time lead against Switzerland before Noelle Murray's penalty gave them a 3-2 win and first place, though both teams had previously ensured that they would advance. Ireland manager Susan Ronan said: "For the third year in a row, we have finished top of the group in the first qualifying phase, there is still a chance we could be awarded a top seed place in the next round which would be a massive bonus for us." Croatia overcame hosts Slovakia 2-1 to end in third.

Group 9
Holders Germany needed only to avoid a very heavy defeat to progress, as it is they defeated Wales 7-0 to go through with 25 unanswered goals in the three games. That allowed the Czech Republic to finish second as they beat hosts F.Y.R. Macedonia 4-1.

Group 10
Norway's 2-0 win against the Netherlands with goals from Skammelsrud Lund and Mo Wold gave them first place, though both had already moved through with convincing wins against Slovenia and Moldova. The meeting of the bottom two was won 5-0 by Slovenia.

Group 11
Spain, winners in 2004, finished top as they drew 0-0 with 2007 runners-up England, but both were already ensured a place in the second qualifying round next spring. Tracey Kevins, managing England while Mo Marley was at the FIFA Women's World Cup said: "We deserved the win the game but over the tournament, Spain have been the more clinical in front of goal." The Faroe Islands were third on goal difference following their 2-2 draw with hosts Lithuania.
